Nassau Court System & Jurisdictions

Nassau County is part of the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Florida. The two main court branches — Circuit Court and County Court — handle different categories of cases.

Circuit Court

This is a court of general jurisdiction. It handles serious cases:

  • Criminal cases for felonies
  • Civil claims over $50,000
  • Family law — divorce, child custody, alimony, adoption
  • Probate cases (the judicial process of settling an estate)
  • Juvenile cases
  • Appeals from County Court

The circuit court judge also considers petitions for protective orders and cases related to mental health under the Baker Act.

County Court

Most people encounter this level. It handles traffic violations, misdemeanors, and civil disputes up to $50,000, including small claims cases up to $8,000. Detailed information about the court structure can be found on the Nassau County page on the Florida Courts website.

How to Get a Copy of a Nassau Court Document

Copies of court documents come in two types: uncertified and certified. An uncertified copy is suitable for personal review. A certified copy is required for submission to another court, government agency, or employer, as it contains the official seal of the clerk.

Ways to Obtain

  • In Person. Visit the clerk's office in the Nassau County Courthouse. You will need the case number or the full name of the party and the approximate filing date.
  • By Mail. Send a written request specifying the case number, document type, number of copies, and return address. Include a check or money order for the appropriate amount.
  • Online. Some documents are available through the clerk's electronic portal. Downloading uncertified copies is usually free, but there is a fee for certified ones.

Divorce certificates registered by the court clerk can also be ordered through the Florida Department of Health — they maintain records from 1927. If you are interested in inmate information, use the Florida Department of Corrections search.

Some records have restricted access. Juvenile cases, sealed or expunged criminal cases, and certain family documents are not released without a court order.
